The Village of Gilberts was platted in 1855 and incorporated in 1890. The village grew slowly until the proximity of Interstate 90 and the growth of nearby Elgin brought increased development. By 1930, Illinois Route 72 was completed and became the village's first paved road. Gilberts did not have electricity until the Rural Electrification Administration brought it as a part of the New Deal. More recently, Gilberts is located in Kane County and governed by a Village President and Board of Trustees form of government.  The Village's policies are set by the Village Board and administered by the Village President.

Voter Registration. You may register to vote at the Village Hall, 87 Galligan Road. You must have 2 forms of identification one of which must be a photo ID. You may register at any time other than 30 days before an election.

Vehicle Stickers/Dog Tags. By Village Ordinance, you have 45 days from the time you move into the Village to purchase vehicle stickers and dog tags. The stickers and tags must be purchased annually and renew on May 1st. You may purchase them at either of the Village’s 2 locations, 87 Galligan Road or 73 Industrial Drive. forms on the Village’s website.
